Whether you’re traveling out of town for the weekend or the cookout is at your house, the last thing you want to be thinking about over your holiday weekend is the air conditioning going out! Labor Day weekend may be right around the corner, but the hot temperatures are here to stay for a little while longer. We want you to be ready, so here are some tips and tricks to make sure your HVAC is ready for this long weekend as much as you are.

Turn Down Your Air Conditioning

If you’re heading out of town, turn it down! Adjusting your thermostat while you’re on vacation will help conserve energy and save you money. If you have a programmable thermostat, you can always set the temperature to return to normal towards the end of the weekend so it will be cool and comfortable when you return home.

Remember, if you have furry friends staying behind this holiday weekend don’t turn the temperature up too much. They need to stay comfortable just like you and could suffer if temperatures get too warm while you’re away.

Avoid Blocking Vents

If the cookout is at your house, make sure you avoid blocking any of your air vents. The more people in your home, the hotter it will be and blocked vents disrupt airflow causing your system to work harder than it may need to. Before the party starts, make sure that furniture or other miscellaneous objects are never obstructing your system’s air vents.

Extra Tip: Avoid opening doors leading outside more than necessary during the cookout. Every time a door is opened, cool air will rush out while warm air is rushing in!

Change Your Air Filters

No matter if you’re heading out of town or staying home, you should be checking your HVAC filters monthly. If you notice that your filter is clogged with dirt, dust and debris, your system isn’t working as efficiently as it could be. This could cost you more money in the long run! It only takes a few minutes and you’ll not only breathe easier, you’ll appreciate the smaller energy bill, too. You could also risk the chance of your unit breaking down, so don’t forget to clean or change your air filters!
